'Supporting You to Support Others'

Debra Purdue

Background

Debra is a qualified Learning Disability nurse and has worked in various nursing, residential and assessment / treatment settings. Starting her career in health and social care, Debra initially worked on a Youth Opportunity Scheme in an Occupational Therapy Department, within her local hospital, where she gained valuable experience in working with people with a learning disability. She went on to complete her nurse training at the same hospital and spent several years working there once qualified. After starting a family, Debra worked part-time in small nursing home caring for older people with a learning disability and people with dementia. She then spent several years as a Specialist nurse with the National Autistic Society and has both a personal and professional interest in the autism spectrum. During her time with the NAS she supported individuals with a diagnosis of either autism or Asperger Syndrome with associated mental health needs and behavioural challenges. Her role involved working with specific individuals to devise and agree support plans based on both assessed and the individual’s identified areas of need. Debra has experienced many positive changes for people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health needs over the years.

Training experience

Whilst working for the NAS Debra, who was conscious of the need to support staff to develop personally and professionally, achieved her Assessor qualification and supported candidates to achieve a recognised Level 3 qualification and improve their practice.

Debra left the NAS to become an Assessor for the Brandon Trust, a charity that supports people with Learning Disabilities. During Debra’s time with Brandon Trust, her role developed to include supporting learners with National Vocational Qualifications at Levels 2, 3, 4 and Registered Managers Award. She supported staff within the organisation and external companies. She also undertook verification of qualifications and teaching of both practical skills and knowledge in subjects relevant to Health and Social Care. In addition, she supported Managers with the skill sets required within their teams, accessing appropriate training and ensuring that staff training records were up to date.

In order to continue in a teaching and training role, Debra then worked for Voyage Care as an Internal Care Trainer, delivering training to the organisations staff across the South West of England and South Wales.

Debra set up OASiS Training in June 2014.
